Chapter 10

Talia looked down at the miracle in her arms and sighed. She’d resisted having children with Drew at first, figuring neither of them had what it took to be a parent. They were both rough and liked to fight. Drew had grown up with a serial killer mom and a dad who didn’t have time for parenting. From what Talia had heard, Drew’s father hadn’t been interested in parenting his son.

Talia’s early childhood days had been spent in captivity, being treated like a science experiment. That was before she’d started living the life of a hunter, hidden in a household where two breeders acted as her parents. She had been treated better than a lot of other hunters growing up. Hunters weren’t usually shown a lot of love and affection, but the breeders who’d raised her didn’t agree with that method of parenting. She’d still been trained to fight and kill from an early age, like all hunters.

“I’m so glad I changed my mind about being a mom,” she told her daughter who watched her with wide blue eyes. “I don’t even mind that it’s made me a little weak.”

“You’re not weak,” Drew said as he walked into the room with Zoe under one arm. “I’m the one walking around with this irritating scruff ball all the time.”

“If you minded her that much, you’d have dropped her at the animal shelter already,” Talia pointed out. “I think you’re secretly a dog person.”

“Bite your tongue,” Drew replied. “Cats are the way to go. I had a cat growing up that used to try to trip my dad when he’d walk down the stairs. In the cat’s defense, my dad used to yell at her all the time, so she hated him. That cat was a total badass. She’d pee in my shoes if I put her food out late.”

“We’re never getting a cat,” Talia stated. “That doesn’t sound like a great pet to me.”

“Cats aren’t pets,” Drew argued. “They’re roommates who either tolerate you or try to kill you.”

“I still don’t want a cat,” Talia replied.

“My mom didn’t like her all that much,” Drew admitted with a sad smile.

Talia didn’t need to ask what had happened to Drew’s cat. She knew enough about his psycho mom to figure it out.

“Don’t give me that look,” Drew said as he set Zoe in the doggie bed he’d bought earlier that day. Talia didn’t think Zoe would stay in it since the dog seemed determined to sleep right outside Miri’s door.

“What look?” Talia asked.

“The poor Drew had a really fucked up childhood look,” he replied. “I had a fucked-up childhood, but I survived. We’re going to make sure Miri has a great childhood.”

Talia nodded and kissed the top of Miri’s head. “Yes, we will. Miri is never going to wonder if she’s loved.”

“We should have ten kids,” Drew announced.

Talia snorted. “Unless you plan to start giving birth to them, we’ll stick with the one we have.”

She headed into Miri’s room and laid her in her crib.
